Coleus plants are grown for their striking, velvety foliage, which comes in vibrant combinations of bright red, burgundy, yellow, green, pink, brown and bronze. They are perfect for summer bedding schemes, adding colour as a filler at the front of borders, or for creating exotic or jungle-style planting displays. Coleus also thrive in pots, containers, conservatories or as houseplants. These plants grow best in a sunny or partially shaded spot, which helps bring out their beautiful leaf colours. They prefer moist, well-drained soil. As tender perennials, coleus cannot withstand cold weather, so they are typically grown as annuals in cooler climates. Plant them out in May, once the risk of frost has passed. To keep plants year after year, bring them indoors during autumn or take cuttings in summer to grow new plants for the following spring.
