Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire', commonly known as Bonfire Cushion Spurge is one of the most colourful spurges ever. It is a clumping perennial that forms a flamboyant mound of foliage in deep purple, red, orange and green. In late spring, bright sulfur yellow bracts light up the entire plant for many weeks. Bonfire Cushion Spurge spring foliage will emerge green, and the upper growth will quickly change into red, purple, and orange (while the lower foliage will remain green). The foliage will tend to deepen to burgundy during mid-summer, and will change to rich red in fall. Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire' grows up to 1.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire' is also known as Euphorbia epithymoides 'Bonfire'. Euphorbia epithymoides 'Bonfire' is best grown in dry, well-drained soil, and in full sun. It freely self-seeds and removing spent flowers will prevent unwanted self-seeding. Its medium texture fits well in landscapes, but for a composition that shines, a few coarser, or smooth textured plants are a nice counterbalance. This red cushion spurge typically dies back to the crown every winter, and grows back every spring. In the late winter, make sure not to disturb the crown when it is dormant and not easily visible.
